Protect Your Systems from Extreme Springtime Weather

Some Important Information about Springtime Weather from APC.

    Flooding

    • Floods are the most common and widespread of all natural hazards.
    • Just 6 inches of rapidly moving flood water can knock a person down,

    Lightning

    • each flash typically contains about 1 Billion volts and 10,000 - 20,000 amps of current, which can transfer through wiring or pluming and destroy everything in its path.
    • An average of 20 million cloud-to-ground flashes have been detected every year since 1989.
    • Lightning often strikes the same location several times a year. The Empire State Building is hit about 25 times annually.
    • The United States experiences approximately 100,000 thunderstorms with 20 million lightning strikes every year.

    Tornados

    • A tornado is the most destructive storm of all, with wind speeds reaching 300 mph.
    • May and June are the months of peak tornado activity. May 2003 holds the record, with 543.
    • Tornados hit most frequently in the middle and late afternoon.

What is the expected life of an APC UPS battery?

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) batteries typically last three to five years Life expectancy is based on several factors, including usage (the number of times the unit must go to battery power) and other environmental conditions. below are some guidelines to ensure the optimum life expectancy of a battery.

    1. Make sure the APC UPS is kept in a cool, dry location with plenty of ventilation. Ideally, the temperature where the UPS is kept should not exceed 75 degrees F (24 degrees C). Also, for ventilation purposes, leave roughly 1 to 2 inches on each side for proper airflow.

    2. Perform runtime calibrations on the UPS only one or two times a year, if necessary. Some people perform runtime calibrations to verify that their runtime is sufficient. However, performing frequent runtime calibrations can decrease the life expectancy of an APC battery.

    3. Do not store APC batteries for extended periods of time. new batteries can be stored 6 to 12 months. After this period, the battery should be used, or it will lose a great deal of its charge. It is not advisable to store batteries that have already been in use.

    4. Do not exceed 80% of a UPS unit's rated capacity, on account of the reduction in runtime. Increasing the load decreases the runtime. In the event of a power failure, a UPS loaded to full capacity will drain and discharge its battery quickly and will lessen the life expectancy.

Note: In order to ensure longer runtime on battery, laser printers should never be plugged into a battery backup outlets of a UPS. Be sure to use the "surge- only" outlets (on appropriate models) for laser printers. For those units without "surge-only" outlets, its recommended that the laser printer be plugged into a separate APC surge suppressor.

Amicus Attorney 7 Tip of the Month - Effectively handling email
    amicus

With the addition of the "Outlook View" in Amicus 7, users now have a familiar email interface with which to handle basic email activity (i.e. sending, replying and forwarding) email.

However, this new "view" is not a complete substitution for the familiar ComCenter view from Amicus Attorney V+. In fact, this writer has found that many users still fail to appreciate the importance of the "Outstanding" and "Today" views in the ComCenter (now Communications module).

The design of Amicus V+ is such that the "Outstanding" view in Version V+ copied ALL emails from the Outlook Inbox into an Amicus Attorney email record. From there we would associate that email with one file, one contact, make one time entry, possibly create a to-do, reply, forward and/or mark that email "dealt with", or if that email was irrelevant to our practice, we might delete it in the V+ Outstanding view.

Now, in version 7, the "association" function for email is done in the Outlook View. And in "7", one can associate an email with multiple files and contacts. Once the association is made, in this writer's opinion, the best practice is then to go to the OUTSTANDING VIEW (which is essentially now the "ASSOCIATED/SAVED EMAIL VIEW"...i.e. those emails that have been associated to files and/or contacts in the Outlook view), and then "deal" with same - i.e. make time entries, turn the email into a to-do, review it, possibly forward or reply and then mark same "dealt with" when you've done what needs to be done with that particular email message. And, even though the programmers have given us the functionality to make a time entry or mark an email dealt with in the Outlook view, this writer believes the best practice is to associate emails in Outlook and then DEAL with same in Outstanding or Today, as the Outstanding or Today view IS the Amicus email record.
